Kidney Stone Clinic

Kidney Stone Clinic brings together specialists from urology and nephrology who work as a team to diagnose and treat patients with urinary tract stones. The Stone Clinic has state-of-the-art equipment and technology for diagnosing, treating, and preventing kidney stones. This program not only emphasises on the importance of preventive treatment but also excels in managing and treating stone disease.

The clinic specialises in the:

  • Diagnosis of stones
  • Surgical and non-surgical removal of the stone
  • Preventive Treatment on further stone formation

This clinic is headed by Dr. P. Thirumalaisamy, one of the most experienced Urologists. Dr. P. Thirumalaisamy under the guidance of Dr. Chinnasamy, well known Urologist of South India, started doing endoscopic and percutaneous stone removal treatments in 1980s in Chennai. His vast experience and his large practical knowledge in handling and using the equipment give rise to very high rate of success in stone removal.

Dr Thirumalaisamy is being helped by Dr. K. S. Ramalingam, Nephrologist in treating renal failure in stone disease patients and investigating the causes of stone formation and their prevention.

An Advanced Stone Removal System was installed and commissioned in our centre. Dornier Compact Sigma Modular Lithotripter was installed in June 2005. This has been coupled with Siemens advanced C – arm Siremobil Iso-C and Adora Ultrasound Scanner. These two equipments, C-arm and Ultrasound Scanner, are used to locate the stone and direct the shock waves to the exact location of the stone and monitor stone disintegration. These equipments coupled with the Lithotripter aids in the accurate loaction of the urinary tract stone.

The Lithotripter has a therapy head which moves freely and can be operated from many positions making it possible to direct the waves from any angle. This is an extremely versatile noninvasive, non-surgical treatment for many stones in the urinary tract.
